Purpose and Potential

Our purpose in life and the ability to express our full human potential are inextricably intertwined with each other. To the degree that we are aware of our purpose in life, our calling card and legacy, is the degree to which we express the full magnificence of our potential.

Defining a purpose in life is one of the most challenging things that you can do. It takes guts, determinations and the courage to step outside of social expectations and dogma. When we start living for our purpose, we can come up against challenges from other people. This is generally because these people are feeling threatened that someone has the courage to follow their dreams, and it reflects back to them the fact that they are not chasing what they really want in life.

If you don’t have a clearly defined legacy, you will find it incredibly hard to make good decisions that positively influence your life. This is because you have no reference point upon which to base the decision. If you have a purpose you can ask yourself every time you need to make a decision, ‘is this helping me to become who I want to be?’ If part of your legacy is to be remembered as a fit and healthy person, does eating a tub of ice cream every night help you achieve your purpose in life? We can use the seven areas of life to actually help us identify our legacy and use these tools to guide us in the creation of a meaningful life.

After we have defined our legacy we will start to reveal the true scope of our potential. We all have the ability to contribute something truly meaningful and valuable to the world. However, our potential will not blossom unless we give it a map of purpose to follow.

An example of this is no more apparent in training programs. The majority of clientele who exercise do not have a purpose in their training. An athlete, has a purpose. When training for a purpose, it makes every decision that more important. It makes every training session count towards that end goal. If we can get ourselves outside of an aesthetically driven mindset and start creating a performance driven mindset, we will achieve far more. The difference between someone with an athletic mindset vs a general mindset, is that the athlete is no longer working out, the athlete is training.

Training is far more productibe than simply working out. When you train, you can directly relate that to your purpose in a clear, definable way. For example, if your physical purpose in life is to be as strong and fit as you can be, each training session has meaning and an element of success to it. However if you are training just to lose weight, not every workout is a motivational experience. You can train for 3 weeks and not see a pound disappear off the scale. This will generally not be conductive to making exercise a valuable part of your life. Also, as most of our clients are aware, the fitter and stronger they get, generally the better their bodies look. Train for function and form will always follow.

Remember, to be truly successful in any area of your life you need to have a clearly defined purpose. When you have defined this purpose, you will be able to truly express your potential in all areas of life.
